I'm sad that we can't all drop what we're doing and go to Michigan right now, or even to Apple Valley, to be together with family and celebrate his life. Tim suggested that I make a post on here for us to share memories of grandpa. Dad has already shared a few stories and I'm happy he did, I would also love to hear more.
When I was in high school we went back to visit them. My favorite memory of that time with him was watching how he cared for grandma. We were leaving the house to go site seeing and he was next to the car when grandma came out of the house. Once grandpa saw her coming he got over to her as quick as he could and held her hand and arm as she came down the steps.
ReplyDeleteIt's a little thing, but being able to see how much he cared for grandma in his actions has stayed with me. It also showed me exactly where dad got his chivalry from.
I remember visiting Michigan with Dad years ago. Grandpa picked us up from the Airport. In the car I wasn't talking much as I watched out the window. I noticed some road signs for upcoming cities. Then Grandpa and Dad starting talking about memories of visiting a particular city, but they couldn't remember the name. I blurted out one of the names I had seen on the sign. Both stopped, looked back at me with the exact same raised eyebrow and both said yes, that's it. I don't remember what else I said, but I do remember having a great trip freaking myself out in Grandpa's basement and watching Swamp Thing over and over.
ReplyDeleteOne trip I remember was with Alli and Tim, we were in the back yard. Alli and I were sitting in a red wagon with Timmy pushing us. Tim was just in his diaper.
